Fatima Al Rashed – University of Pennsylvania – Bwiam General Hospital Intern, Summer 2019

My name is Fatima Al Rashed, and I am a rising junior at the University of Pennsylvania. I was born and raised in Basrah, Iraq. Last summer, I was a Power Up Gambia intern at Bwiam General Hospital, where I discovered a new family! With my paramedic training I was able to work as a Nurse Assistant at the hospital and I also worked on a menstrual study and health outreach program at the local school. Its amazing to think that just last year, I was enjoying a dish of Benachin, which is a very famous Gambian dish that I absolutely love, with fellow interns at Fatou’s house, the chief of the hospital kitchen. Please check out my blog about why I have fallen in love with The Gambia and consider it a second home! https://global.upenn.edu/penn…/blog/gambian-meal-tradition

Raisa Rai- University of Pennsylvania – Bwiam General Hospital Intern, Summer 2018

“A summer in The Gambia was eye-opening. It enhanced my interests, secured my dreams, and allowed me to engage in a rich, beautiful culture. I had the chance to meet people who I will remain friends with for a lifetime, try new foods, and learn phrases in several languages. I cannot appreciate the people who made this opportunity come true enough. It was a life-changing experience that gave me a sense of direction and inspired me to pursue global health,” Raisa Rauf. Raisa was a 2018 Power Up Gambia summer intern who graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2019.Read about her experience: https://ulife.vpul.upenn.edu/careerservices/blog/2018/11/30/the-gambia/

Victoria Smith- Drexel University – Bwiam General Hospital Intern, Summer 2018

“My time living in The Gambia absolutely changed my life! Some of my favorite memories were at Bwiam General Hospital, learning about solar power, gardening, medicine, and making wonderful friends. I especially enjoyed trekking with the reproductive and child health team to nearby villages for vaccination and primary care clinic days. And of course, any time in The Gambia would not be complete without afternoons spent sipping attaya underneath mango trees.” The hospital garden Victoria started still continues to produce fresh vegetables for the hospital patients and staff. Smith is now a second year MD-PhD Student at UC San Diego School of Medicine.
